Prunus mahaleb
Little known outside of the Middle East, Mahlab comes from a sour cherry tree that grows wild throughout the region and in southern Europe. The ground seed is used in baking breads and pastries for festive occasions, like tsoureki, the Greek Easter Bread. Try adding it to spiced or fruit breads.
