The turn to heavier, hearty foods at this time of year means we’re warming up the kitchen by slow-cooking soups, stews, curries and bakes. Here at Gewürzhaus, we love meals that truly warm us from the inside out - especially during the colder months.
Cooking low and slow isn’t a new technique - it’s been around for a very long time. One of the reasons it’s such a popular cooking method is because it allows flavours to develop and deepen, creating complexities that reflect the time spent on it. Slow-cooked meals are also a busy cook's best friend, saving both time and money. A few, simple ingredients are transformed into something special with just a little time and attention. Many of our herb and spice blends have the ability to really transform and elevate almost any slow-cooked dish.
We’ve created a list of some of our top slow-cooked recipes, featuring a wide variety of our spice blends - so you can create some winter comfort food at home.
North African Lamb and Pearl Barley Soup
A rich, hearty soup of lentils, tender lamb shank and pearl barley. Infused with earthy spices like ground cumin and our fiery Harissa blend - this soup will really warm you up! Serve with a dollop of Greek yoghurt and whatever fresh herbs you have on hand.
24 Hour Chicken Bone Broth
It’s back to the old ways of real food with this slow-cooked bone broth. It gently simmers over a long period of time to draw out the nutrients and flavour from chicken bones and leftover vegetable odds and ends. It’s perfect as a warming drink, or a welcome addition to soup, stew or risotto.
Beef Stifado
Gently spiced with our prized Goddess of Hunting blend and whole spices like cinnamon, allspice and bay leaf, the result is hearty, flavourful and best enjoyed with a glass of red wine and a side of crusty bread.
Oma Rosa’s Gulasch
A European winter classic, Gulasch is a rich stew that’s flavoured with ground paprika, garlic and bay leaf. Make it like Oma Rosa used to and serve with our Silesian Potato Dumplings, homemade sauerkraut and sour cream.
A truly delicious recipe for pork belly, using our Asian Wok spice blend and whole white peppercorns. Serve sliced with steamed rice and eggs, or Chinese Steamed Bao and lettuce.
Beef Massaman Curry
Rich and aromatic, this full-bodied curry is the perfect dish for a cold night. Serve with steamed rice, fresh coriander and crushed peanuts. For a vegetarian alternative try our Vegetarian Massaman Curry recipe.
Moderately hot with fruity tones, this yummy curry is infused with ground chilli, turmeric and cinnamon. Topped with fried curry leaves and a side of mango chutney - you can’t go wrong!
